This is on-demand post. Many people asked me to provide guidelines to clear ISTQB foundation level certification exam.
I appeared for ISTQB foundation examination in 2015 and cleared with 77% marks. I will share some guidelines which I followed. Here you go :-
- First register for the TEST:
This is the first thing which you need to do. I was planning for this examination from year 2013. I was thinking, first I will study well then will register for examination. But we IT employees don’t do anything without pressure. I didn’t study anything for examination till year 2014. I postponed it so many times. I realised until I register for examination and book slot, I will not start preparation. Immediately I booked available slot and paid the examination fee. You can register for examination easily. Guidelines are here. I started feeling pressure as soon as I booked slot. That’s obvious. Exam Fear.
2. Know ISTQB syllabus well:
You can find updated syllabus for ISTQB foundation examination here. Direct link of syllabus for year 2018 is here. You must need to go word by word of syllabus. They also provide good study material covering complete syllabus. I read this completely at least thrice and made a very good short notes. You should also study this line by line and make a short notes and keep revising through short notes. It will be really helpful.
3. Refer textbook recommended for ISTQB foundation level examination:
You should refer the most recommended book for ISTQB foundation. It is Foundation of Software Testing: ISTQB Certification” by Rex Black. It covers the complete syllabus in details with glossaries and mock tests. You can find PDF of this book here.
It is good to buy hard copy of this book and you can mark, comment, highlight important points which helps you in remembering and to the point understanding. You can buy it from here:
I can say that this book is more than enough to clear ISTQB foundation level examination. You will feel bored while reading this book as it is complete theory but I bet it will help you in understanding manual concepts in details. It is also very useful for clearing manual testing interviews. You must read glossary and attempt all mock tests given in this book.
4. Practice some mock tests:
You should also try some mock tests available online. I can list out some websites below:

If you are experienced in Software Testing, you will not feel tough much. For less experienced or freshers, it will be little tough. Read the questions properly and answer. Multiselect answers will be confusing but you need to find out the thin line difference. You can clear it easily.
Once you clear this certification, You can put ISTQB foundation level logo on your resume.
